Breast Pump FAQ

I live in Massachusetts. What kind of pump can I get?

Massachusetts residents can choose pumps from a variety of brands* pumps such Ardo, Ameda, Freemie™", Lansinoh®", Medela, Spectra, Unimom, Willow, and others offered by contracted DME providers. Find the one you prefer and we’ll cover the cost.

*You can obtain these and other brands from contracted DME providers within the Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts network. Call Member Services at the number located on the back of your member ID card to explore your options.

What if I live outside Massachusetts?

You can order a breast pump from any participating provider in your state’s Blue Cross Blue Shield plan. To find a provider, go to Find a Doctor and search "durable medical equipment" in your zip code.

What if I want a pricier pump?

You can apply the cost of a covered breast pump toward the cost of an alternative pump. Call Team Blue for more details.

Are there any additional costs involved?

Additional costs will only be incurred if an upgraded pump is chosen.

I already bought a pump. How do I get reimbursed?

Easy: submit a subscriber claim. But first, call Team Blue to confirm your benefits.

I need support with breastfeeding. Does my plan cover that?

It might. To know for sure, call Team Blue to learn about these and other maternity benefits.

For help finding a provider, call Member Service at the number on the front of your ID card. For answers to questions about your pregnancy and your baby, visit Living Healthy Babies®´.

Members who live in Massachusetts can also get a breast pump from any DME provider that has a contract with us. You can visit Find a Doctor to find a durable medical equipment (DME) provider near you that carries breast pumps. Click on Medical Facility, select the Specialty tab, and choose DME-Breast Pumps from the drop-down menu. Enter your address and then choose your plan network.

As a Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts member, your coverage may include the rental or purchase of a manual or dual electric breast pump for each birth without paying co-insurance or a deductible. We cover a breast pump from a participating DME provider with a prescription from your clinician. We don't cover hospital-grade breast pumps.
