Our greatest asset is our people
Their talent. Their energy. Their passion for their communities. It’s why each year, our volunteer programs connect thousands of our associates with health-focused nonprofits across the commonwealth. It’s hands-on help, right at the heart of where we all live.
Our associates serve the community through:
Bluecrew volunteer projects
By offering volunteers a robust calendar of more than 200 year-round service opportunities, we help our associates use a minimum of 15 hours of paid volunteer time to assist the current needs of our community through a project of their choice.
Skills-based volunteering
Associates looking to make a deeper impact can apply their unique talents to help solve a not-for-profit’s business challenge through our Skills-Based Volunteer Program.
William C. Van Faasen community service sabbatical
Each year, our premiere volunteer program provides one associate a paid sabbatical for up to six months to work with a not-for-profit focused on health justice. The program is designed to enhance these associates’ skillsets while providing valuable support for our community partners.
Service Day: One Community. One Blue.
Every September, our associates come together for a day of service to support not-for-profits across Massachusetts. Organizations are invited to submit a project need that aligns with our health justice focus, and if it’s accepted, they’re provided a grant to cover the project costs and a group of enthusiastic volunteers to complete the task.
Since its inception in 2011, Blue Cross has made more than $10 million in community contributions on this annual day of service. We’ve built new outdoor play spaces for children to stay active, harvested fresh produce to donate to local food pantries, cleaned beaches and cleared trails to improve access to green space, and more.
Excellence in Service Awards
Our pinnacle service award celebrates the collective impact of our associates and community partners. This year’s award honors, Keishalee Shaw, Business Information Architect, Enterprise Technology, for her leadership of our Black Professionals Network and her commitment to creating opportunities for the next generation. As a parent leader and member of the Board of Ambassadors with Brooke Charter School and through her volunteer efforts with various youth-serving not-for-profits such as Thompson Island Outward Bound Education Center and Brookline Steps to Success, Keishalee is making an impact.
